2D only effect created for the close up shots where we first see the ship underground. This would set the tone for the look and feel of the larger ship.
 The ship begins to emerge. Note the horizontal flares that needed to be matched to the practical ones, and the added edge debris around the hole.
 We being to see the large mass of the ship take form. We have also augmented the foreground with dynamic debris and cracking from the FX team.
 The undulating colors were created in comp and driven by volumes and mattes provided by CG. Creating enough depth while still obscuring the full interior was a delicate balance.
 The close up shots like the one above proved extra tricky when trying to match the practical lighting with that of the CG ship. We can also see the ship beginning to die here on screen right.
 The infection like death spreads through the ship. Again note the huge horizontal flares that needed to be matched to the practical ones.
 The ship explodes. The explosion needed to be violent enough to show the power of the ship exploding, but still safe enough to not hurt the characters.
