Opening shot of the caves near the surface, with a mix of green and brown. Nuke particle look developed to help sell the wind and vortexes.
Extensive camera work was done in comp to help the more static puppets feel like they were really flying and falling through the caves.
Multiple angles, front and back, required slightly different tricks. Note: Rian’s face and hair have a blue tint in the practical puppet, this is not due to spill.
Glowing moss, wooshing clouds, and fireflies all present here. Hair keys on the puppets were also a challenge due to the dynamic lighting used on set.
This wide included a swap from practical to CG double ad Deet flew away from camera, as well as generous use of deeps to aid in the background integration.
The Nurlocs were one of the various types of creatures we would see in this scene. In this case its a mix of puppet and CG Nurlocs, and a split screen with a puppet extra.
